Volunteer Intern – 10-20 Hrs/Week, Must be Located in Cleveland

Every spring and fall, we work to hire a handful of truly incredible makers and creative professionals who serve as the backbone of our day to day operations. Volunteer interns take part in a comprehensive application, interview, and training process, then step into the field with Xyla and Andrew to make BATB happen. Applicants should be aware that they will likely have significant screen time on our YouTube channel, and will be responsible for creating custom educational content on their own.

Available Positions:

Production Assistant

Brief: The BATB Production Assistant volunteer intern is the direct assistant to and co-filmographer with Andrew. Common tasks include scouting and setting up filming locations, serving as assistant filmographer, placing lighting and audio equipment, set striking, and post production workflows.

Time Commitment: ~6 to 8 hours per week on-site, ~4 to 6 hours per week independent work

Desired Experience: Experience with professional, collegiate, or high-school theater production is useful. Hands on experience with digital videography or photography. Knowledge of Non-Linear video editor such as Adobe Premiere, iMovie, Final Cut, or Davinci Resolve. Any experience in audio recording or sound design is a plus.

Provided Training: Full training will be provided to the applicant as part of their compensation package. Training will include Non-Linear Video Editing in Adobe Premiere Pro, Basic and Advanced Videography, Professional Audio Capture and Mixing, Set Lighting, and Remote Media Management for production workflows. Additional training will be provided or subsidized as required.


PR and Social Media Assistant

Brief: The BATB PR and Social Media Assistant volunteer intern is the direct assistant to Xyla and head of all Social Media publication and public relations planning. Common tasks include planning and executing social media campaigns, managing company branding, developing public marketing efforts, conference and presentation applications and planning, and media outreach.

Time Commitment: ~3 to 5 hours per week on-site, ~7 to 10 hours per week independent work

Desired Experience: Experience with Facebook, Youtube, Instagram, and Snapchat marketing, both grass-roots and paid. Hands on experience with advertisement design and product photography. Knowledge of photo and graphics editors such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign. Any experience in conference or presentation planning is a plus.

As Beauty and the Bolt is an educational startup, the majority of our monetary resources go towards video production, educational initiatives, or large-scale events. As a result, we instead have worked to offer a comprehensive package of non-monetary benefits, as well as the opportunity to earn direct cash payments.

  • For Production Assistant Only:

  • For Marketing and Social Media Assistant Only:
      • Lease of a Wacom Intuos Tablet and Pen
      • Complimentary Printing on Epson R1800 and R2400 Wide-Format Printers
      • Installations of the Full Adobe Creative Cloud Suite
  • Additional Compensation:
      • 10% Commision on all sales of Beauty and the Bolt fundraising merchandise, educational kits (including bulk institutional kit orders), disbursed on the first of each month.
      • Deferred Compensation Arrangement: In the event that Beauty and the Bolt is able to raise substantial funding (>$100k) through advertising revenue or investment, semesterly volunteer interns will be entitled to $1,500 in bonus compensation per semester they worked with Beauty and the Bolt. This deferred compensation arrangement will be available in perpetuity to Former and Current Volunteer Interns.

Volunteer Mentor – 1 or More Saturdays/Month, Must be Located in Northeast Ohio

Teaching large numbers of students about STEAM requires large numbers of volunteers! Our Volunteer Mentors are individuals who are interested in teaching children, young adults, and others the basics of Making at one of our in-person mobile classroom dates  throughout Northeast Ohio. Full training is provided for all volunteers, and meals are provided during while volunteering.

Video Review Team – 1 Hr/Week, All Online!

Each time we make a new video, we work with our VRC to make it the best it can be! Be the first people to see our rough video cuts, help us catch mistakes before we publish, and streamline the videos so they’re both educational and entertaining. As an added bonus, you get to see our VIP Outtakes reels from each video, as well as a custom Beauty and the Bolt “VLT” T-Shirt to thank you for your help!
